Further sustainability of the locomotive fleet

On 16 October, we added two type 1700 electric locomotives to our Strukton fleet in the Nehterlands. These locomotives were taken over from the Dutch Railways, who are in the process of renewing their own fleet. For Strukton Rail, this is an excellent opportunity to give these locomotives a second life.

Strukton Rail has took over several 1600 and 1700 locomotives from the Dutch Railways in the past. With this expansion, we want to carry out more machine transports emission-free. The locomotives are scheduled for a ‘major service’ in our workshop in Zutphen, after which they will also get a new look. Curious what they will look like? Stay tuned! It is expected that the new locomotives will be fully deployed on the Dutch railways from 2025 onwards.

Sustainability ambition

The purchase of the locomotives is in line with Strukton’s sustainability ambitions to focus more on electric transport. An electric locomotive is not only more environmentally friendly, but also better for the health of our employees. The electricity supplied via the overhead line comes from wind energy and is therefore 100% green. In addition, an electric locomotive does not emit CO2 or particulate matter, which contributes to a cleaner environment.

The locomotives are used as traction during track renewals and maintenance work. Although our train operators initially had to get used to the electric locomotives, they don’t want it any other way! The electric locomotives accelerate smoothly, accelerate quickly and do not need to warm up beforehand.

Rail Magazine

Rail Magazine made a nice episode about the second life of the NS 1600 and 1700 locomotives after their service with NS. We are proud to have been able to contribute to this.
