Strukton to install ERTMS in the North of the Netherlands

Strukton is going to roll-out ERTMS on the Leeuwarden – Harlingen Harbour section on behalf of ProRail as part of the ERTMS Northern Lines project in the Netherlands. BAM was awarded the contract for the same work on the Leeuwarden – Stavoren section. During the roll-out, we will gain experience with the latest version of ERTMS together with the parties involved. Preparations are in full swing and implementation will start in 2026.

What are we going to do?

We are going to install the ERTMS infrastructure on the Leeuwarden – Harlingen Harbour section. This includes new cables, axle counters and balises in the track. We are installing ERTMS as a replacement for the existing train safety system (ATB). After the commissioning of ERTMS, we will immediately remove the old train safety system.

ERTMS in the north of the Netherlands

The Leeuwarden – Harlingen Harbour section is part of the test strategy of the Netherlands ERTMS programme. This section of track will host testing of the latest version of ERTMS with converted track, converted trains, new systems and trained personnel. Ben van Schijndel, Strukton Rail’s ERTMS programme manager: “It is fantastic to be so intensively involved in this first line and to be fully involved in the test strategy.”

When the tests between Leeuwarden and Harlingen Harbour are successfully completed, BAM Railinfra Nederland will install ERTMS between Leeuwarden and Stavoren. This will be followed by the construction of ERTMS on the rest of the Northern lines. The ERTMS Northern Lines project consists of a total of six sections of track and the Groningen and Leeuwarden stations. The project is a collaboration between ProRail, Arriva, the Provinces of Fryslân and Groningen and the ERTMS Programme Directorate.

In November, BAM Infra Nederland and Strukton were also awarded the contract for the construction of ERTMS between Kijfhoek and the Belgian border. This work will start at the end of 2025 and will continue until 2028.

Strukton’s experience with ERTMS

Strukton already has extensive experience with the roll-out of ERTMS. We constructed the Betuweroute, including ERTMS, rolled out ERTMS on the port railway line and in Denmark we are the infrastructure party that is rolling out ERTMS on the Fjernbane in a consortium with Thales. In recent years, Strukton has been one of ProRail’s innovation partners in the ASAP project to accelerate the ERTMS Programme. Innovations that Strukton developed within ASAP are the ERTMS reality model and the ERTMS trackbot. These innovations will play an important role in the roll-out between Leeuwarden and Harlingen Haven.
