Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE) and Siemens have agreed to found a joint venture for the servicing and maintenance of locomotives in a newly to be realised locomotive workshop at the port of Rotterdam.
The workshop is scheduled to open in the summer of 2019. Strukton has been selected to design the depot and surrounding infrastructure and is also the intended constructor for the whole.
It was not only our local presence that made MRCE and Siemens select Strukton. Actually, the reason is that we integrate knowledge and experience in the fields of road and rail infrastructure, buildings and rolling stock. This combination is quite unique. We can offer the interdisciplinary approach that is ideal for a workshop, where everything comes together. In addition, we know what running a depot is about, based on our experience in our own workshop in Zutphen. We are very well acquainted with workshop processes, (technical) systems, logistics and more.
Service Hub
Siemens’ new Vectron locs will be maintained in the workshop, as part of the MRCE fleet. Additionally, the workshop will reliably service and guarantee the maximum availability of third-party fleets with innovative maintenance technologies. As such, the workshop will be an important service hub for European rail operators in Rotterdam, which is one of the crucial locations along the main corridors of the RailNetEurope Network, the Association for facilitating traffic on European rail infrastructure.
Part of European rail network
The location of the new workshop in the port of Rotterdam will enable rail operators to optimize their long-term planning of necessary service stops for locomotives on their routes. The port is an ideal location for servicing locomotives arriving from throughout Europe, and will eliminate long service transfer runs that cost time and money. As the biggest seaport in Europe, Rotterdam is a key logistics hub in the European rail network. Each week, there are more than 250 intermodal rail connections in the port. Operations and service stops can thus be combined and coordinated with one another. The workshop will handle inspections, preventive and corrective maintenance work, which also can include simple repairs and upgrades.
Joint venture
Mitsui Rail Capital Europe (MRCE) and Siemens have agreed to found a joint venture for the realisation of the locomotive workshop. Siemens and MRCE each will hold a 50-percent stake in the joint venture. The company will be headquartered in Rotterdam, and be named Locomotive Workshop Rotterdam (LWR). Both partners are jointly investing in the joint venture, primarily to build a new workshop for locomotives. Founding of the firm is planned in the first half of 2018.
