Power socket in the rail system

The overhead lines of the public transport network are perfectly capable of serving as the electricity grid. You connect a solar park directly to the direct current public transport network and combine this with storing the electricity generated. This renders utilisation of the alternating current network unnecessary. Many countries have extensive rail networks stretching to all corners of the land. If you were to hook up solar or wind turbine parks to these networks, the rail network could serve as an electricity grid and it would not be necessary to use the alternating network.

Another option: points heating powered by overhead lines. This constitutes an efficient solution to replace gas-fired points heating with electrical points heating.

Reuse braking energy

Our experts at Strukton Power make it possible to reuse braking energy. This could serve to lower power consumption of a metro network by around 7%. In the future, it will even be possible to achieve a 10% to 20% reduction.

Sustainable rolling stock

Power electronics is the driving force behind every rail-bound vehicle. Outdated electronics will drive any fleet onto the scrap heap, despite still being able to serve for many years. Strukton Power upgrades the power electronics, vastly extending the useful life of rolling stock. The power electronics used are energy efficient, offering room for future-proof solutions including hybrid trains, battery-operated trains and hydrogen trains.

Sustainable rail infrastructure

Electrification is crucial in the energy transition, but we can help in other ways to make rail infrastructure more sustainable – during installation and upgrading, and with respect to maintenance and operations. We do so, for example, by applying recycled materials in sleepers, ballast, acoustic barriers and catenary supports. Deploying the ZKL 3000 enables us to take the tracks out of service remotely. We apply data capturing and analysis for scenario planning together with our customers. And we take biodiversity into account when creating or maintaining railway embankments. Naturally, we always work in a safe and sustainable way.
